"Blind wood" refers to portions of branches where no buds open; there are no leaves, shoots, or spurs. It's common to many varieties and in old, long-abandoned fruit trees. For farmers and cultivators, this is an undesirable quality; it requires patience to cut back that branch and turn it into a productive one. For us here at Blindwood; cider is about renewing life. Often times the unproductive parts of life must be pruned to ensure that the healthy parts can flourish. To the eye of the patient horticulturalist, it means nothing but potential in the years to come.

OUR STORY

Hi! I'm Drew, cider maker and head dreamer at Blindwood Cider. Our cidery had its humble beginnings in my cramped garage in Hayward, CA.  I've embraced a life long passion for home brewing, experimentation, and all growing things.  I've learned the value of sustainable, responsible, and non-exploitive horticulture.

It's this devotion and experience that we put into every ounce of our craft cider.  We use only the best apples, and never brew from concentrate. At Blindwood Cider, we aim to wring the best draft from every branch.

Our Cider

Our Cider

ginger peppercorn.jpg

Ginger Peppercorn

5.8% abv

This cider is a complex procession of flavors. Starting with crisp, dry apple and a fresh warming, spicy ginger bite. Finishing with the smooth, savory herbal flavors of California bay leaves and pink peppercorns that linger on the palate. We hope you enjoy this cider as much as we do, it's perfect for everyday drinking.

dry hopped.jpg

Dry hopped

5.8% ABV

We use bold amount of classic west coast style hops to dry hop this cider. This sizeable dry hop gives our cider plenty of floral and dank aromatics with notes of citrus and orange. The juicy qualities of the hops help to compliment the inherent fruity flavors in the cider. This cider will be well enjoyed by any hop head or the seasoned cider drinker.

honey sage.jpg

Honey SAGE

6.9% ABV

Infused with locally sourced culinary sage from Santa Cruz farms and wildflower honey from Sonoma County. This cider creates subtle layers between delicate herbal sage aromatics, a sweet floral undertone of honey and crisp dry cider.  Although this cider is infused with honey, it maintains dryness while still being easy to drink and subtly sweet. We love pairing this cider with foods and celebrating with friends!

Drew Gabel

Founder & Cider Maker

A bay area native, Drew’s love for apples began after working on a local farm. Spending hours in the orchard at UC Santa Cruz, pruning, cultivating, and harvesting, his brewing interests gradually shifted from homebrew ale to craft cider. After his time in Santa Cruz, Drew further honed his skills under world-renowned cider maker Peter Mitchell, and attended intensive craft cider workshops at Oregon State University. His biggest passion is to honor the apple from branch to glass while bringing unique and exciting flavors to the burgeoning field of craft cider.

CATHY GABEL

Sales

Cathy joins Blindwood with over 10 years experience in sales, team leadership and customer service. She brings positivity, passion and tenacity to the Blindwood team. Cathy fell in love with gardening the moment she met Drew amongst his garden in 2015; cider was soon to follow and then Drew himself. She has committed herself to spreading joy through quenching the thirst of Bay Area residents with her husbands refreshing approach to cider.

Erin GABEL

Sales & Marketing

Erin, is Drew's nagging older sister. So naturally, her role within Blindwood is to make sure everything is perfect, organized and micromanaged. Prior to her time with Blindwood she worked in the field of Behavior Analysis for over 15 years. She brings with her a passion for family, the Bay Area, and a data driven approach to all things cider. After being gluten free for almost 10 years; she found the market lacking in dry, drinkable cider and is proud to support her brother's endeavors to give cider a new name, one palate at a time.

Also, Erin loves flowers (& Tupac). She side hustles under the alias Ashes to Asters.
