Our Story

Our Story

Why Blindwood

"Blind wood" refers to a section of a branch where no buds or leaves exist. It's common to many varieties and in old, long-abandoned fruit trees. For farmers and cultivators, this is an undesirable quality; it requires the branch be cut back to renew life and turn it into a fruitful and productive one. This takes time and patience to achieve.

For us here at Blindwood; cider is about renewing life. Often times the unproductive parts of life must be pruned to ensure that the healthy parts can flourish. To the eye of the patient horticulturalist, it means nothing but potential in the years to come. We believe that sometimes, the long way is the best way and we hope that you can taste the difference in our ciders; patiently and proudly crafted.

Our cidery had its humble beginnings in our cramped garage in Hayward, CA.

Blindwood originated with a desire to create interesting and thought provoking ciders using a wide array of apple varieties, botanicals and aging processes.

We hope to show you the diversity of what patiently crafted cider can be.

Who We Are

DREW GABEL

Founder & Cider Maker

EMAIL DREW

After many years as a paramedic, Drew’s love for apples began after working on a local farm and orchard in Santa Cruz, CA. He was inspired by the near 80 varieties of apples and the diversity of plants growing on the farm. Drew cultivated his passion for cider under world-renowned cider maker Peter Mitchell, and attended intensive craft cider workshops at Oregon and Washington State. His biggest passion is to honor the apple from branch to glass while bringing unique and exciting flavors to the field of craft cider.

ERIN GABEL

Operations Manager & all the etc. things

EMAIL ERIN

Erin, is Drew's jaded older sister. So naturally, her role within Blindwood is to make sure everything is perfect, organized and micromanaged. Prior to her time with Blindwood she worked in the field of Behavior Analysis for over 15 years. She brings with her a passion for family, the Bay Area, and a data driven approach to all things cider. After being gluten free for almost 10 years; she found the market lacking in dry, drinkable cider and is proud to support her brother's endeavors to give cider a new name, one palate at a time.

Also, Erin loves flowers (& Tupac). She side hustles under the alias Ashes to Asters.

We are small Batch. We are Local. We are Family owned & Operated.
